about

The title of 16mins’ first record, Erlkönig (Elf King), comes from a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. A father holds his feverish son close while urging his horse faster and faster through a dark forest towards safety. The Elf King tries incessantly to lure the child away from his father into the woods, and the child screams out in fits of protest. As the poem ends, he dies in his father’s arms.

Even though “Erlkönig” is often translated as “Elf King,” the poem’s original text does not imply such a sinister meaning. In the mind of the seriously ill child, the Erlkönig appears as a mysterious, alluring entity in a secluded and peaceful forest. Like a cloud of smoke, it is indescribable and shapeless. In the same way, 16mins’ style is hard to define. It's better to just have a listen for yourself.
